Internship Opportunities

The Maddy Institute’s internship programs provide college students with hands-on opportunities to experience the inner workings of government and the legislative process.

Valley Legislative Internship Program


Each semester, 11 college students are selected to work in a city, county, state, or federal elected official’s office in the San Joaquin Valley. Maddy Interns gain hands-on experience in policy research, constituent services, and community outreach, all while learning about the challenges and opportunities that shape our region. This program is ideal for students passionate about making a difference and building stronger connections in the San Joaquin Valley.

Applications are open in February for the summer, April for the fall semester, and September for the spring semester.

Bob Beverly Sacramento Legislative Intern Scholar Program


Each summer, 2-4 college students are selected to work at the center of California’s state government, providing a unique opportunity to work in the Governor’s office and the capitol offices of San Joaquin Valley legislative leaders on both sides of the aisle. Maddy Interns assist with legislative research, attend hearings, and closely observe the policymaking process. This program offers valuable insight to the state legislative process and equips students with the knowledge and experience needed to thrive in state-level public service.

Applications are open from November to December.

Jim Costa Washington, D.C. Legislative Intern Scholar Program


Each summer, 2-4 college students are selected to work in the nation’s capital, working in the offices of members of the San Joaquin Valley congressional delegation on both sides of the aisle. Maddy Interns assist with legislative research, attend hearings, and engage with policymakers shaping the future of the country while highlighting the San Joaquin Valley’s vital role in national policy and progress. This program offers valuable insight into the federal legislative process and equips students with the knowledge and experience needed to advocate for the San Joaquin Valley’s priorities on a national scale.

Applications are open from November to December.

Agricultural Policy Intern Scholar Program


Each summer, 5 college students are selected to work in a state government regulatory agency in Sacramento, specifically focused on agriculture policy. Maddy Interns gain firsthand experience addressing the unique challenges facing California’s agriculture industry such as food safety, pesticide regulation, and environmental sustainability. This program provides an in-depth look at the policies shaping one of the San Joaquin Valley’s most vital sectors, preparing students for a career in agriculture policy and public service.

Applications are open from November to December.
